The Dawn of AI Revolution in Chip Design

October 21, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

IEEE, October 21, 2022

Abstract: We are at the dawn of an AI revolution for every human activity including chip design. The AI revolution in chip design is absolutely necessary because of key macro trends influencing chip design and would further accelerate the AI revolution in all other fields. In this talk I will start with my personal journey of discovering AI for EDA and introduce several state-of-art AI applications in various chip design processes. Then I will explain the AI revolution from my perspective and predict how it would potentially revolutionize chip design process as well as design jobs in the long term. At end, I will illustrate key challenges in this journey and give some advice for students aspiring to enter this exciting field.

Bio: Haoxing Ren (Mark) leads the Design Automation research group at NVIDIA Research. His research interests focus on AI and GPU acceleration for EDA. He also spent 15 years working at IBM Microelectronics and IBM Research developing internal EDA tools and methodologies. He is widely recognized for his leading work in physical design and AI for EDA, and has received multiple awards, including IBM Corporate Award and best paper awards at ISPD, DAC and TCAD. He is a graduate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and earned his PhD from University of Texas at Austin.
