I just had to post something in response to what I heard from Gary Smith at DAC and now on Twitter. Gary is saying, “Mentor is #2 in EDA Revenues,  passing Cadence (using our special numbers that omit design services)”. Plenty of fans are re-tweeting the same line.

It’s simple to just look up the public information for trailing twelve month (ttm) revenues to show that Cadence is still #2 in EDA, IP and services revenue:

Mentor Graphics, $789.53M

Cadence Design Systems, $868.27M

So in summary, Cadence is still ahead of Mentor by a slim margin of $78.74M annually. These are the public numbers that analysts like to use, so why should we be using special numbers?
